POMPOM BEANIE

A pompom beanie (also known as a bobble hat) is, similar to a beanie, a close-fitting head covering without a brim, to which a pompom made of wool or fur is attached. Pompom beanies are usually knitted or sewn from fabric. Caps belonging to soldiers’ uniform decorated with bobbles are considered the precursors of the pompom beanie. Later, in the 19th century, they were worn by people working in fishing and shipping. The pompom served as a shock absorber to prevent sailors from bumping their heads below deck in stormy seas.
